PE & Sport Premium
All children and young people should live healthy active lives. The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend that all children and young people should take part in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity for at least 60 minutes every day.
To support this, since 2013 the government has provided funding to schools to improve provision of Physical Education (PE) and sport activities offered to pupils. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on sustainable improvements. Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils this year received £16,000 plus an additional payment of £10 per pupil. At St Giles this equates to £16,960.
Schools are expected to prioritise PE and Sport premium spending to improve in the following 5 key areas:
- increasing staff confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sport;
- increasing engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity and sport;
- raising the profile of PE and sport across the school, to support whole school improvement;
- offering a broader and more equal experience of a range of sports and physical activities to all pupils; and
- increasing participation in competitive sport.
At St Giles, we believe sport and PE are essential for children's overall development, enhancing physical and mental health, building teamwork and confidence, and promoting skill development, social interaction, and wider community involvement.
Pupils wear their PE kit to school on PE days, maximizing time spent in lessons by eliminating the need to change at school. We work closely with other local schools and are members of Mid-Sussex Active (MSA), providing opportunities for pupils in KS1 onwards to attend competitions and festival at local venues. MSA also provide annual Sports Crew training for our Year 5/6 pupils, equipping them to lead lunchtime sports activities for younger children. We also have strong ties with Cumnor House and Ardingly College, regularly taking part in their sports events. Our KS2 pupils also enjoy taster sessions at Horsted Keynes Tennis Club during the autumn and summer terms. In spring, Year 3 and 4 pupils attend swimming lessons, with additional sessions for Year 5 and 6 pupils who haven't yet reached the 25m requirement.
Towards the end of the summer term, we hold our annual Sports Day, which includes both competitive and non-competitive events. We are extremely proud that in July 2024, the school was officially awarded the Gold School Games Mark for the fourth year running! This was awarded in recognition of our commitment to and the development of sport and competition across the school. It truly is a fantastic achievement for all involved!
